Gledeshuset is a small theatre for different cultural events in Hønefoss. The site has unique qualities both in a local and regional context. The location is right on the riverside, downstream of the great waterfall that gave name to the city itself. The river corridor defines a large open space in the landscape, ensuring a visual connection between the site and the city center.
A large wooden volume containing the stage and a sloped seating area tilts back and reveals an open space beneath, in which the vestibule and bar are located. A restaurant is located on the ground floor in the existing building, connected to the new vestibule. While the stage and seating area are experienced as an enclosed volume, the vestibule and bar is an open space that connects to the landscape and riverside both visually and spatially.
The building’s volumetric expression reflects the overall idea of the project; it’s playful, yet confident and elegant enough to house the already well acknowledged local revue tradition.
