KIRUNA CITY HALL
International architectonic competition, prequalified, 2014
In 2014 Stein Halvorsen Arkitekter AS participated in the international architectonic competition of the project for the new City Hall in Kiruna. The drawings developed for this project will show a construction that adapts and change after the weather conditions. The City Hall will be surrounded by a park that will work as a place for the residents to gather. The park will be lit up by small lamps, to make the city hall visible during the winter and dark times. The lights will be adjustable after the conditions and are never supposed to overcome the night sky.
the atriums will be lit up by big windows installed vertically in the ceiling. By installing the windows vertically more light will come through. During the summer when the sun is high, there will still be enough light shining through the windows. However, it will not get hot as the windows are tilted and not horizontal.
The façade of the City Hall will be cladded in painted wood. This way the building will blend more into the surrounding landscape. The building will still be a signal building.
